Your Rights Under McKinney-Vento
Review your rights under the McKinney-Vento Law, which ensures school enrollment for children and youth without a fixed, regular, and adequate place to live. If this describes your situation, you may qualify for educational support and rights.
Are you staying the night in a
- friend’s or family’s home due to loss of housing or financial hardship?
- shelter or transitional housing?
- motel, hotel, or campground because there’s no other option?
- car, park, or place not meant for sleeping?
Students in these situations have the right to
- stay in their current school if it’s best for them or
- enroll in a new school immediately, even without required documents.
