Food for Thought in Carson City

This nonprofit combats childhood food insecurity by providing weekend food bags to hungry children. Educational leaders and school staff coordinate the Backpack Program, which discreetly distributes nutritious take-home bags every Friday containing shelf-stable meals for weekend consumption at 13 local schools. The organization serves elementary, middle, and high school students, helping them return to school Monday nourished and ready to learn. Additional programs include infant formula supplements for young mothers enrolled in school, a Grab and Go Meal Program for alternative education students, and summer lunch programs. Parents experiencing homelessness or economic hardship can access these services through school referrals. Community members support the mission through donations and volunteering. For $250, sponsors provide an entire school year of weekend meals for one child.
